Niccolo Paganini and His Moto Perpetuo essays

Niccolo Paganini and His Moto Perpetuo essays Niccolo Paganini and His Moto Perpetuo Niccolo Paganini is the greatest violinist of all time. Raised by a harsh and demanding father, Niccolo practiced incessantly as a child. Early on his skill was already as sharp and majestic as a perfectly cut diamond. He was so good at his music some people speculated he had sold his soul to the devil. In 1745, Niccolo Paganini was is Genoa giving a performance. Critics later said the performance was so phenomenal that they dubbed the 13 year old Paganini a wonder child. After that he toured Milan, Bologna, Florence, Pisa, and Leghorn. Years later in 1805, after he had freed himself of his fathers tyranny, Paganini returned from exile to take up a job as the court violinist in the service of Princess Lucca. Having his job be the job of a violinist Paganini was able to play and practice constantly. During this time he would play a violin with only 4 strings; he would use harmonies to fill in the rest. One time he composed an entire sonata with nothing but the G-string. He remained in the ploy of Princess Lucca until 1813. After this he went back to touring Italy for a long time, Paganinis health kept him bound to tour only in Italy, but renewed health after a stay at a rest cure in Sicily enabled him to go to Paris. His performance there was so striking that it inspired t he words, What a man! What a violin! What an artist! Heavens! What sufferings, what misery, what torture in those 4 strings! from Franz Liszt. His skill was so that a legend built up around him. A legend of him being not quite so natural. His appearance did not help him either. He had a pale, long face and was said to always carry a sardonic smile on his face. Paganini is the most important violinist of all time. He could play 3000 notes in one minute. He introduced new methods of fingering the violin. Most importantly lie the genius of his composition...

Sopyonje analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Sopyonje analysis - Essay Example Cultural symbolism of Pansori Bowyer (151) argues that the use of the p'ansori yields metaphoric outcomes. It has for two decades bolstered the level of admiration of the genre among the society’s youth, and created a desirable avenue through which traditional cultural beliefs and practices can be passed on to various population segments whose behavior is under threat from foreign cultures. P'ansori can be traced to the Jeolla region of southwestern Korea, where the director grew up. The use of "Sopyonje" as the title of the film refers to the western genre of p'ansori, which is believed to be secondary to the original Korean one. The film’s setting is misleadingly plain (Bowyer (151). Adopted from a short story text by Lee Chung-joon, Yu-bong is a key architect of p'ansori who moves away with his two children, daughter Song-hwa and son Dong-ho who are pansori, and drummer apprentices. The three characters travel across the rural areas in an attempt to perform and nurtu re their skills while showing a determination to preserve the key values of pansori. At this point, the film deviates from a typical American culture of open approach to and assimilation of foreign cultures to one of self-preservation. The characters look for an excellent environment where they can relocate their closest kin, their history, and their original pansori or masculinity. These are typical cases of a community that is keen on engaging in the quest for cultural preservation at any cost. Bowyer points out that the film features a relentless Korean population that seeks to widen the opportunities for not only playing p'ansori, but retaining its original form and value (151). In light of the inevitable cultural influences that would follow, p'ansori essentially embodies a socially appealing struggle to preserve the vital "Koreanness" in an environment where modernity threatened to erode the basic values that define the culture. Yu-bong and his pansori team’s journey in a quest to retain the Korean culture outside of their native homes or Korean cities were basically driven by feelings of Han. Han is a Korean cultural feeling that one harbors when he or she cannot or is prohibited from showing feelings of discrimination, alienation, or abuse because one is a victim of power imbalance. Yu-bong’s team manage to slip away from their native homes, and carefully choses the traditional cultural environment in the countryside to correct the cultural imbalance caused by the influx of Japanese and American norms. Quest for women’s voice Apart from struggling to reclaim the Korean culture which is at threat of Western civilization, Bowyer (151) points out that Im clearly defines the role of women in the modern Korean society and clearly adds to the quest for the dignity of the gender following many centuries of female abuse in the hands of South Korean men. Through the symbolic use of Song-hwa character, â€Å"Seopyeonje† has for the pa st two decades attracted tens of millions of viewers in the country and beyond (Bowyer 151). The current impressive achievement of women in the country’s leadership can partly be attributed to the soft, effective language that Im uses in the film to appeal to all segments of the society to support women causes. Conclusion Generally,

Discussion 10 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Discussion 10 - Essay Example With time "junk DNA" or the "non coding DNA" has been considered to play significant regulatory roles in modulating the performances or actions of the "coding DNA". Knowledge about this relationship is highly imperative as it depicts the behavior of gene in artificial insertion of unknown genes. Only a few studies could understand the role of this relationship in structural formation, but an understanding about the regulation is yet to interpret. Since non-coding genes were not assigned any function but they are present in the cell carries a deep meaning. If they do not play any role, the sequence of syllables should be random, which is not. This is a great subject of research as the "junk DNA" possess some kind of coded information which scientists are trying to decode. Potentially, some of these genes are thought to possess repetitive patterns which may be associated with cancer. Role played by Junk DNA- Harvard Medical School has reported that "junk DNA" in yeast has some regulatory role in controlling nearby genes. They may play important role in controlling gene expression during developmental process. They may act as enhancers or silencers for transcription of proximal genes. They may regulate translation process. Thus, "junk DNA" is not actual garbage but it is a way to conserve cellular energy. As these genes play vital role in modulating coding sequences, they are no more considered as junk

The Estimation on the Value of Information Systems Dissertation

The Estimation on the Value of Information Systems - Dissertation Example The available literature and researches lack appropriate analysis to bring out the real value of information system applicable in the health sector. This study is aimed at proposing an integrated general information system model that can be applicable in hospitals in the UK and demonstrates the usefulness and value of the model for strategic hospital management and patient’s safety. Introduction More Hospitals in the UK have been faced with forceful regulations and pressure to better their clinical quality, speed and procedures of services, reduce costs, expand access and improve the overall clinical journey taken by patients in different hospitals. This situation has led to hospitals to invest in information systems and information technology in an effort to overcome some of these mentioned issues. In hospital environments where information systems have been introduced, there has emerged the need to evaluate the system’s implementation as related health care providers are experiencing increased care demands and higher expectations when it comes to service delivery (Goldszal and Bryan 102). Most of the studies conducted before offer insights on the information systems value in relation to investment returns, associated savings and costs, and quantitative measurements types. Concerns have been raised however regarding the adequacy of measuring payoffs produced by hospitals that have implemented information systems and information technology in as it is believed to neglect the intangible value from the involved stakeholders. Although it has been observed that information systems and technological advances have greatly been achieved over the years, there has been minimal consensus on the impact level of these introductions on patient care. Most of the studies concentrate on analytical and quantitative aspects making it hard to quantify the possible gains in a qualitative nature (Huang 250) The empirical part of this study will be conducted in selecte d hospitals in the UK which have been identified as being on the forefront in the use of IS/IT applications to support both non-clinical and clinical functions in the UK. A total of fifteen hospitals were identified and in-depth interviews conducted with staff and doctors from different departments in an effort to come up with a broad range of different data and views (Laet, Naudts and Vandevivere 198) Literature Review The use of information systems which have been accredited to improve the healthcare quality have led to quality measurement through incorporating quality and clinical indicators as more visible aspects of quality improvement efforts in hospitals are increasing in demand. Such systems comprise of the health administration of healthcare segment systems to ensure convenience in the health administration system. The health admiration system is very influential in determining the quality outcome as well as the way resources are utilized. There are rich literature already established on the value of information systems on the health sector but still the results of such literature are unsatisfactory. One of the main set backs of the already established literature is that they do not provide a quality correlation with the accreditation requirements even in situations where hospital compliance with reporting and accreditation requirements is acceptable. Such literatures have been observed to result in inconsistent, partial and conflicting results.

Gassendis Objection To Descartes Argument

Gassendis Objection To Descartes Argument Gassendis objections to Descartes ontological argument for the existence of God are based, as many philosophical arguments are, on minor details within the Meditations. The objections for our purposes should be constrained to the first and second Meditations, as it is those that are most concerned with arguing for Gods existence. Gassendis objections are not quite enough to be considered strong enough to refute the argument laid out with care by Descartes. By identifying what the specific objections are and then comparing them to the arguments made by Descartes in terms of reason, blind faith and even simple assumption, we can determine that Descartes original arguments for the existence of God are stronger than Gassendis objections to them. In the first Meditation, Descartes argues that he knows he is alert and thinking because if not, that would prove the existence of a deceiving God and, since God does not deceive (by definition), would not lie to him about being alert and awake. Gassendis objection to this is that rather than assuming everything he has learned from birth is a suspect, Descartes should assume that everything he has learned from birth is believable and rule out things as they are disproven, not as they are proven, so as not to need to thinking of God as deceiving or to believe in an evil Spirit that deceives man. There are two problems that indicate that Gassendis argument is more powerful. One is that since Descartes cannot disprove God, he cannot prove him either, and the other is that Gassendi is correct, logically, in choosing to see something/someone who created all life in the best possible light first without automatically believing the worst. Specifically, Gassendi states that wouldnt it have b een more in accord with philosophical openness and the love of truth simply to state the facts candidly and straightforwardly? In the second Meditation, Descartes has argued that we should believe nothing until there has been some indication that it is true and exists by God. Without this indication, it may very well not exist whatsoever. He states that this holds even for the truths of faith: we shouldnt decide to believe them until we have perceived some convincing reason for thinking that they have indeed been revealed by God. Gassendis objection to this argument for the existence of God, that we would believe nothing if we did not believe it came from God himself, is that he believes he is thinking and alert, that his existence is made up of a Mind (at this point), so therefore he must believe that without having credible proof that God gave him that thinking. Thomas Aquinas gives us five ways to determine whether there is a God. The fourth way, the gradation of being argument, is paraphrased as follows. In order to call something hotter, one must understand what the hottest thing can possibly be. In the instance of genus of animals, the original of the genus is the uttermost or cause of all that genus and is therefore the ideal of it. Therefore man must be less than his original creator, or the ideal of the genus, which is assumed to be God, the perfect being, in whose image we are made. Objections to this argument can vary. One of the more obvious ones is that Darwin and, consequently, hundreds of other scientists have determined that with the survival of the fittest and evolutionary theories, the original of a genus is not the ideal. In fact, the original is soon replaced with an evolutionary improvement and soon dies out because of this competition. Using Aquinas reasoning with these facts in mind, the original and creator of the human genus is dead and sub-par, lesser than the man of today rather than the ultimate man. This is, in fact, an anti-God line of reasoning with this added knowledge. The fifth of these ways is the intelligence, design argument. In this argument, to paraphrase, bodies work toward a goal that we do not understand, and most natural things lack knowledge. In the case of an arrow, for instance, the direction of the arrow is being directed by intelligence in the form of the archer. Therefore so too humans are directed to the goal our natural bodies are working toward by a being we call God. Though this argument is one of the more popular arguments for the existence of God, Aquinas has inadvertently made a mistake in his reasoning. He claims that natural beings do not hold knowledge of their own. However, he gives humans intelligence in his example with the arrow if an archer is intelligent he can direct an arrow to hit a target. Why, then, does the archer not possess the intelligence Aquinas says is given him by God to find his own goal, his own target, so to speak. The issue lies in the claim of intelligence. Most natural things do not possess knowledge, including humans. However humans are the intelligence it takes to direct an arrow and simultaneously lacking the intelligence needed to reach the humans target, which according to Aquinas can only be accomplished by another intelligent being assumed to be God. The objection that can be raised is that either humans are or are not, as natural beings, intelligent beings. If we are intelligent beings, we can find our own path to our target without the guiding force that is assumed to be God. If we are not intelligent beings, we are not knowledgeable enough to direct an arrow to its target. With either option the argument for design in the five arguments for the existence of God by Aquinas falls apart with little picking at the seams. In conclusion, Descartes arguments for the existence of God are not better than Gassendis objections to them, but in fact neither one has good enough arguments to be called strong. Aquinas is hardly different, having dissected two of his five arguments for the existence of God with formidable objections and different lines of reasoning.

The Jazz Age :: essays research papers

The Jazz Age   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Many of the influential artists of the past came from the jazz age such as Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Basie and Crosby, Sarah Vaughan, Cab Calloway, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, and many others.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Frank Sinatra was dominating the scene in 1947. He had a voice that was carefully articulated, and had meaningful quality that could make everyone feel that he was sending a private message in his songs to everyone in the audience. It was not however a happy scene. This was widely known as Sinatra’s career skidding down. His personal appearances were gone along with the screaming fans. His once top charted recordings were now near the bottom, if they even placed at all. His contracts with filmmakers and record dealers were thinking about dropping him.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Sinatra’s problems were due to a few factors with his career. One of them was the fact that he held friendships with Mafia bosses, and his obvious womanizing of all fans and press. There were outside sources too, including the introduction to newer singing styles.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Sinatra wasn’t the only one hurting during this time. The big band swing era was on its way out too. The bands started taking strike after the war and singers became the main attraction as apposed to the band. People were paying more attention to the singers as the main performer and the band were placed somewhere less needed. Sinatra had been undermining the band swing era that had been his foundation. Sinatra’s orchestra was the foundation of his career and what had originally made him famous, but by 1947 his orchestra was no longer in existence. For several years Sinatra kept singing expertly but he was very modest about it. His musical career was instant and fantastic, and he was once again a superstar reaching a status that is so great.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In 1948, Billie Holiday was at her peak, physically and musically. Surprisingly the main reason due to her transformation was her spending time in a federal reformatory for the possession of narcotics. While she was in the federal reformatory she was stripped of her narcotics and because of this she lost her pudginess and became a strikingly beautiful woman. Even after not singing for so long her voice was retained and was said to be even richer and more refined than before.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Billie Holiday was unable to work at nightclubs because of police restrictions with performers with criminal records.

Driving Statistics in Utah

In the statistics I read, I found that in every category there was â€Å"speeding too fast†. Obviously that is a problem in Utah. In my experience with drivers, I have noticed that many people speed and don’t even realize that they are doing so. I think that speeding is a problem because so many people die from it. On the page it stated that â€Å"15. 2%† of people die from speeding and that â€Å"14. 7%† of teens die from speeding. I will admit that it is shocking that those percentages are so high. I didn’t expect that many deaths from just going to fast in a car.It has brought new light into my mind that people need to be more aware of how fast they go. Another thing that really took me by surprise is the percentages of overcorrections. The deaths in people are â€Å"7. 9%† and teens are â€Å"8. 8%†. Those percentages are lower than I had expected them to be. In my own life, I have had a number of people dear to my heart die from o vercorrection. I am not saying that there should be more, but that I have noticed more deaths from overcorrections than speeding, running of the road, or failure to keep in proper lane.It is a dangerous thing that is deadly and shows that it is important to be aware of your actions. On the Top Five Reasons Teens Crash on Utah Highways, I noticed that it says â€Å"Driver Distraction 7. 5%†. I wondered if that included texting and assumed it did. I’m guessing that the majority of those crashes were because of texting. There are so many people who don’t realize that it is a huge distraction and looking away for a few seconds, can make a difference. In my own life I have seen many teens around my age texting and driving and thinking it doesn’t matter when it really does. One text message could make the difference.

Noam chomsky essays

Noam chomsky essays Noam Chomsky asserts that the power elites of society shape public opinion and set the agenda for our society- and that in this way, they maintain their system of control. There are a small number of people that are given permission to use up the Earths resources. The problem is that the people who are not in this small number are led to believe that these issues are not important and so are discouraged from having an opinion. He argues that because of this, that real democracy is subverted and we do not even debate the important issues at hand, such as the depletion of the Earths resources. In my paper, I will discuss why I believe that Chomskys assertion is in fact true. . In many ways Noam Chomskys viewpoint points to factual and relevant information. Large corporations, along with the media control a large part of our daily lives. Each day when we turn on the news, we are getting (in a sense) entertained for 30 minutes. A great deal of important information is diluted for the sake of the viewer. There can be nothing that actually drives them to sit down and think about an issue, for that would depress the viewer and thus lose them as an audience. There is a great lack of real news out in the world today. Shows such as Entertainment Tonight show this phenomenon-where people would rather learn about the glamour and excitement than depleting resources. We as a society are led away from thinking that there even is a problem; and for the people that do believe that there is a problem, we merely label them as overreacting. In order to find the real and important information, one has to dig deep into government files and alternative news stories. It is not that the info is not available; its just that the info that is available is extremely hard to find. This is not done by accident either. Those large corporations hold so much control ove...

Thermoplastic vs. Thermoset Resins (Composites)

Thermoplastic vs. Thermoset Resins (Composites) Thermoplastic  polymer  resins are extremely common, and we come in contact with thermoplastic resins constantly. Thermoplastic resins are most commonly unreinforced, meaning, the resin is formed into shapes and have no reinforcement providing strength. Examples of common thermoplastic resins used today, and products manufactured by them include: PET  - Water and soda bottlesPolypropylene - Packaging containersPolycarbonate - Safety glass lensesPBT - Childrens toysVinyl - Window framesPolyethylene  - Grocery bagsPVC - PipingPEI - Airplane armrestsNylon  - Footwear Many thermoplastic products use short discontinuous fibers as a reinforcement. Most commonly fiberglass, but  carbon fiber  too. This increases the  mechanical properties  and is technically considered a fiber reinforced composite, however, the strength is not nearly as comparable to continuous fiber reinforced composites. In general, FRP composites refers to the use of reinforcing fibers with a length of 1/4 or greater. Recently, thermoplastic resins have been used with  continuous fiber  creating structural composite products. There are a few distinct advantages and disadvantages thermoplastic composites have against thermoset composites. Advantages of Thermoplastic Composites There are two major advantages of thermoplastic composites. The first is that many thermoplastic resins have an increased impact resistance of comparable thermoset composites. In some instances, the difference is as high as 10 times the impact resistance. The other major advantage of thermoplastic composites is the ability reform. See, raw thermoplastic composites, at room temperature, are in a solid state. When heat and pressure impregnate a reinforcing fiber, a  physical change  occurs; not a chemical reaction as with a thermoset. This allows thermoplastic composites to be reformed and reshaped. For example, a pultruded thermoplastic composite rod could be heated and remolded to have a curvature. This is not possible with thermosetting resins. This also allows for the recycling of the thermoplastic composite at end of life. (In theory, not yet commercial). Properties and Benefits of Thermoset Resins Traditional Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, or FRP Composites for short, use a thermosetting resin as the matrix, which holds the structural fiber firmly in place. Common thermosetting resin includes: Polyester ResinVinyl Ester ResinEpoxyPhenolicUrethane The most common thermosetting resin used today is a polyester resin, followed by vinyl ester and epoxy. Thermosetting resins are popular because of uncured, at room temperature, they are in a liquid state. This allows for convenient impregnation of reinforcing fibers such as fiberglass, carbon fiber, or Kevlar. As mentioned, a room temperature liquid resin is easy to work with. Laminators can easily remove all air during manufacturing, and it also allows the ability to rapidly manufacture products using a vacuum or positive pressure pump. (Closed Molds Manufacturing) Beyond ease of manufacturing, thermosetting resins can exhibit excellent properties at a low raw material cost. Properties of thermoset resins include: Excellent resistance to solvents and corrosivesResistance to heat and high temperatureFatigue strengthTailored elasticityExcellent adhesionExcellent finishing (polishing, painting, etc.) In a thermoset resin, the raw uncured resin molecules are crossed linked through a catalytic chemical reaction. Through this chemical reaction, most often exothermic, the resin creates extremely strong bonds with one another, and the resin changes state from a liquid to a solid. A thermosetting resin, once catalyzed, it can not be reversed or reformed. Meaning, once a thermoset composite is formed, it cannot be remolded or reshaped. Because of this, the recycling of thermoset composites is extremely difficult. The thermoset resin itself is not recyclable, however, there are a few new companies who have successfully removed the resin through pyrolization and are able to reclaim the reinforcing fiber. Disadvantages of Thermoplastics Because thermoplastic resin is naturally in a solid state, it is much more difficult to impersonate reinforcing fiber. The resin must be heated to the melting point, and pressure is required to impregnate fibers, and the composite must then be cooled under this pressure. This is complex and far different from traditional thermoset composite manufacturing. Special tooling, technique, and equipment must be used, many of which are expensive. This is the major disadvantage of thermoplastic composites. Advances in thermoset and thermoplastic technology are happening constantly. There is a place and a use for both, and the future of composites does not favor one over the other.

The Reform Program of John Calvin in the City of Geneva Comparing it Research Paper

The Reform Program of John Calvin in the City of Geneva Comparing it with either the Enlish or the Catholic Reformation - Research Paper Example When the Religious tension raised up and took a dangerous course Calvin fled to Basel in Switzerland where he published his first book â€Å"The Institute of the Christian Religion† in 1936. In the following year, he was hired to help reform the Church in Geneva. He was expelled from his duty but he continued his efforts for reform and soon he was called to take over his duties back and lead the church. On his return to his duties, he made several prominent changes in church government and Liturgy regardless of some influential families who were against his policies. Calvin suffered harassment and criticism but remained focused on his mission of improving and bringing in new reforms. In his way, he was supported by the refugees during the election of city council. Calvin tried hard and did his best to promote new reforms both in Geneva and Europe. Calvin’s reforms and ideology is known as Calvinism. CALVINISM: Calvinism is all about doctrine of Predestination and absolu te sovereignty of God which is greatly influenced by Augustinian. (Thomas, 1963) The theology of Calvinism was infused in Europe in 16th century, which is based on five basic reforms, which is recalled by an acrostic TULIP: T: Total Depravity explains that mankind has no power to choose right or wrong paths as people are all helplessly sinners and only God can choose them for the right path. Catholics preaches that this mankind has free will and can choose between right and wrong path, God has given a liberty to people to choose the way they want and will be rewarded accordingly (Steele, 1963). U: Unconditional Election states that People who go to heaven is not because of their good deeds or faith but they were unconditionally chosen by God to be sent to heaven and the rest are lost forever. Catholics says that it is the faith that lived and exists and people will be rewarded in regard of their deeds. L: Limited Atonement says that Jesus gave his life for specific sins of selected people, who will ultimately go to heaven and the God has already chosen people for heaven. Catholicism teaches that Jesus sacrificed his life for all mankind regardless of any favor to specific people and people have to believe it without any doubt. I: Irresistible Grace explains that whoever is selected by God will get the virtue of knowledge of God and the elected person cannot resist the call. Catholicism says that Grace is a divine gift for all mankind but people can resist the call. P: Perseverance of the Saints states that the one who received the call of communion will remain in that state until reach heaven, it is impossible for any person to lose his Salvation. Catholicism says that as human we are all sinful and somehow make mistakes but God is there to forgive and deliver us in heaven. All these five points were strongly condemned by the Roman Catholic Church and they present different view or interpretation of the verses of Gospel from which Calvin supported and spread h is own perceptions. There are different theologies over same verses but the interpretation completely differs to what Calvin tried to prove. ARMINIANSM: (Stanglin, 2009) Armenian theology also has some conflicts with what Calvin’s reforms say. Armenians rejects the idea of predestination and it says that a person is not
