Vaccines Louis Pasteur was a French 19th century scientist, chemist, physicist, philosopher, microbiologist, father of pasteurization, and towards the latter part of his career became an immunologist. Though the immune system had barely even been discovered towards the end of the 19th century, Pasteur was able to develop vaccines for chicken cholera, anthrax, and rabies. Though he started out trying to discover what the culprit was to making livestock and dogs sick, he applied this knowledge and new discoveries to infected humans, which resulted in saving many people’s lives towards the turn of the century and even today. What was the motivation that led to the discovery? Many different motivations set Pasteur’s work into motion. At the young age of nine, Pasteur observed first-hand that people developed rabies from dogs infected with rabies. This might sound like common sense, but in the early 19th century, microbiology and the exploration of infectious diseases were just being realized and discovered by scientists. Camp Mackall airfield is located a mile or so from the main training area. The airfield is surrounded on all sides by the thickest pine forest, one that you would think wasn’t by accident. The thick summer humidity sucked the oxygen from the air. Amazingly the dew and fog never quite leave the airfield, as if to create a more somber atmosphere. The landing strip itself looks dilapidated and left more as a reminder of a different time. WWII era trucks, rusted and worn, are locked behind a fence as a constant reminder of the pain that will come week three. The smell is almost pleasant, like a candle, creating a false sense of comfort that will soon be shattered. The trainig begins before dawn, the time wasn’t known since watches weren’t allowed. The rustling of 400 eager souls, ready for the pain we all knew was coming, filled the air. Loud bullhorns and exploding ordnance coming from every direction drowned out all attempts to organize the mass of candidates. The jog to the airfield was slow but purposeful, and didn’t take very long. Once gathered on the airfield some final instructions were given, groups were made and dispersed evenly throughout the field. Like gathering for a little game, Green Berets from all over Fort Bragg position themselves with fold out chairs awaiting the excitement of other peoples torment. Some even have food, which adds to the misery of not having normal food for seven days. A local fire truck comes screaming by horns blazing and lights flashing, and parks just to the right of the mass of candidates. I find myself, rifle in hand, closest to the fire truck wondering what is next. The fun begins with an instructor briefly explaining the first â€Å"exercise.† The simple task soon felt like a mountain that never seemed to stop rising. Shortly after I hit the dirt, face first the fire truck begins to point the high pressure hose at me forcing me to either endure the sting or move faster. I crawl for what seemed like forever until I heard a horn signaling this station was done, for now. I stand up and move to the next station, simple rifle exercise was the task. With the rifle only weighing five pounds the movement seemed easy; lift over the head, then down to the midsection, then back up again. By the hundredth repetition the rifle might as well have weighed a hundred pounds. Next was logs, four hundred pound logs smooth and smelling of past candidates sweat. The task was to lift the log up, as a team, and then lower to the opposite shoulder. This is the first event that tested everyone’s determination and reason for attending the course, sadly candidates began to quit. The weight of the log, and frustration with fellow candidates, contributed to grown men saying they couldn’t take it. The beautiful pine forest backdrop was replaced with bright simulated machine gun fire, exploding ordnance and instructors gawking at every sign of weakness. It was somewhere between burpee long jumps and kettle bell swings that I caught a glimpse of a sight that I can still picture today. The fire hose was spraying into the air creating a mist, the muzzle flashes from the machine guns flashed brightly. The three hundred candidates continued moving with such vigor reminding me of why I was there,which gave me the boost I needed to endure several more hours of pure pain. The jog home was quiet and quick, grown men eager for good meals ready to eat (MREs). The pure joy of being pushed to the point of total discomfort and breaking thru a mental barrier radiated from every man there. As abruptly as it began the day simply just ended. Nothing else about Balck Friday is special except the good ole fashioned gut check. The pain, distractions and ridicule were meant to weed out the weak and retain the strong. During the reign of Bill Gates as the CEO, Microsoft has always employed young budding talent who were always on the verge of innovation and were considered to be one of the best employers for 11 long years until the same fell into the hands of a bureaucrat. People were no more rewarded for their work but were highly recommended basis the internal politics. The culture within the organization had become dirty, serious and loutish in nature (Eichenwald, 2012). The culture underwent such a drastic change that instead of crippling the competitors in the external world, employees were more conce ntrated towards crippling their own co-workers since the rewards strategy was formulated like that. These internal thrifts ended up delaying of launch of innovative products which had a dramatic impact on the potential market. All this happened due to lack of leadership quality of Ballmer (Carr, 2013). He led the team by applying the policy of divide and rule within the organization thinking that this would fetch him the best possible results. However the scenario was not as expected. The company, who had not seen any downfall until 1999, started seeing its demise. A company whose stock has just portrayed an upward graph started revealing a perpetual downtrend. All this was due to lack of adequate leadership qualities. However the leadership of Ballmer soon ended after fourteen long years and was taken up by Satya Nadella.In the year 2014, the first step that Satya took to try regain the lost power and market share of Microsoft Inc. was to bring a change in the leadership team. His thinking criterion was very different from the former CEO and he clearly expresses his views to work as a cohesive team with broader viewpoint and also encouraged people to find meaning in the work they undertook to perform. The CEO tried to change the approach of the senior leadership team by emphasizing upon the concept of cohesiveness and unity in work (Yarow, 2013). Satya Nadella has redefined the entire leadership team and the same now comprises of such experienced leaders in different functional areas that he is sure to create the history again which Bill Gates had done during his tenure as a CEO. He has only impressed upon the fact that to work in one sway needs unity, optimism, honesty, commitment, reliance and trust. Satya Nadella had applied the lessons that he had learnt about leadership during his school times and they seem to work well for the company as well. He knows when to boost up the confidence of the employees and his teams. If he notices any kind of a downward trend then instead of punishing or questioning people he helps them out which boosts their morale. He also concentrated his attention towards instilling the idea of innovation and implementation. He believes that if the employees are given a room to innovate and implement then growth is bound to happen. His leadership stances will lead to sustainable growth story as he focuses on productivity of not only the company but of every individual who is a part of Microsoft and views the company as a single universe with no fragments. His efforts are directed towards flattening the organization structure which was somehow changed into a vertical structure by Ballmer. This will help the flow of information to become more smooth and stead y (Dua, 2016). Although the layoffs that Nadella has to ensure will create some sort of insecurity within the organization, but once the same is complete, he will have to build up the lost confidence of the existing employee base. Nadella has a very good reputation, but the fear the employees have because of the rule of the former CEO has to be eradicated by his efforts to ensure sustainability in his ideas. Thus Satya Nadella is a leader who chooses to be clear with his ideas. He encourages the idea of learning and practices the same in reality. He narrates to its employees that work should not be the ultimate aim of life. They should make efforts to cultivate their hobbies as this will lead to higher productivity at work as well. Unlike Ballmer and like Bill Gates, Satya Nadella focussed upon one Microsoft Culture which believes in working as a single unified family (Ovide, 2014). All the teams were interconnected to each other and made dependent to each other. The goals and aims of the company w ere narrated clearly to the employees so that all are driven towards the same path. His vision is to see where Microsoft was before 1999 but at the same time his vision also entails benefiting its employees as well. This ensures sustenance in the corporate world and that the competitors should also be made aware that Microsoft is soon going to be a part of the corporate race as it used to be during the time of Bill Gates (Eurich, 2014). Therefore it is understood from the above that Microsoft had suffered a huge thunder bolt during the reign of Steve Ballmer who took away the title of the best employer across the globe. This leadership quality of ensuring to change the fragmental culture of Microsoft into that of unity in work will help it to get back its lost customer base, productivity and dedication that the employees had. The objections for our purposes should be constrained to the first and second Meditations, as it is those that are most concerned with arguing for Gods existence. Gassendis objections are not quite enough to be considered strong enough to refute the argument laid out with care by Descartes. By identifying what the specific objections are and then comparing them to the arguments made by Descartes in terms of reason, blind faith and even simple assumption, we can determine that Descartes original arguments for the existence of God are stronger than Gassendis objections to them. In the first Meditation, Descartes argues that he knows he is alert and thinking because if not, that would prove the existence of a deceiving God and, since God does not deceive (by definition), would not lie to him about being alert and awake. Gassendis objection to this is that rather than assuming everything he has learned from birth is a suspect, Descartes should assume that everything he has learned from birth is believable and rule out things as they are disproven, not as they are proven, so as not to need to thinking of God as deceiving or to believe in an evil Spirit that deceives man. There are two problems that indicate that Gassendis argument is more powerful. Using Aquinas reasoning with these facts in mind, the original and creator of the human genus is dead and sub-par, lesser than the man of today rather than the ultimate man. This is, in fact, an anti-God line of reasoning with this added knowledge. The fifth of these ways is the intelligence, design argument. In this argument, to paraphrase, bodies work toward a goal that we do not understand, and most natural things lack knowledge. In the case of an arrow, for instance, the direction of the arrow is being directed by intelligence in the form of the archer. Therefore so too humans are directed to the goal our natural bodies are working toward by a being we call God. Though this argument is one of the more popular arguments for the existence of God, Aquinas has inadvertently made a mistake in his reasoning. He claims that natural beings do not hold knowledge of their own. However, he gives humans intelligence in his example with the arrow if an archer is intelligent he can direct an arrow to hit a target. Why, then, does the archer not possess the intelligence Aquinas says is given him by God to find his own goal, his own target, so to speak. The issue lies in the claim of intelligence. Most natural things do not possess knowledge, including humans. However humans are the intelligence it takes to direct an arrow and simultaneously lacking the intelligence needed to reach the humans target, which according to Aquinas can only be accomplished by another intelligent being assumed to be God. The objection that can be raised is that either humans are or are not, as natural beings, intelligent beings. If we are intelligent beings, we can find our own path to our target without the guiding force that is assumed to be God. If we are not intelligent beings, we are not knowledgeable enough to direct an arrow to its target. With either option the argument for design in the five arguments for the existence of God by Aquinas falls apart with little picking at the seams. In conclusion, Descartes arguments for the existence of God are not better than Gassendis objections to them, but in fact neither one has good enough arguments to be called strong. Aquinas is hardly different, having dissected two of his five arguments for the existence of God with formidable objections and different lines of reasoning.

In the statistics I read, I found that in every category there was â€Å"speeding too fast†. Obviously that is a problem in Utah. In my experience with drivers, I have noticed that many people speed and don’t even realize that they are doing so. I think that speeding is a problem because so many people die from it. On the page it stated that â€Å"15. 2%† of people die from speeding and that â€Å"14. 7%† of teens die from speeding. I will admit that it is shocking that those percentages are so high. I didn’t expect that many deaths from just going to fast in a car.It has brought new light into my mind that people need to be more aware of how fast they go. Another thing that really took me by surprise is the percentages of overcorrections. The deaths in people are â€Å"7. 9%† and teens are â€Å"8. 8%†. Those percentages are lower than I had expected them to be. In my own life, I have had a number of people dear to my heart die from o vercorrection. I am not saying that there should be more, but that I have noticed more deaths from overcorrections than speeding, running of the road, or failure to keep in proper lane.It is a dangerous thing that is deadly and shows that it is important to be aware of your actions. Thermoplastic vs. Thermoset Resins (Composites) Thermoplastic  polymer  resins are extremely common, and we come in contact with thermoplastic resins constantly. Thermoplastic resins are most commonly unreinforced, meaning, the resin is formed into shapes and have no reinforcement providing strength. The other major advantage of thermoplastic composites is the ability reform. See, raw thermoplastic composites, at room temperature, are in a solid state. When heat and pressure impregnate a reinforcing fiber, a  physical change  occurs; not a chemical reaction as with a thermoset. This allows thermoplastic composites to be reformed and reshaped. For example, a pultruded thermoplastic composite rod could be heated and remolded to have a curvature. This is not possible with thermosetting resins. This also allows for the recycling of the thermoplastic composite at end of life. (In theory, not yet commercial). Properties and Benefits of Thermoset Resins Traditional Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, or FRP Composites for short, use a thermosetting resin as the matrix, which holds the structural fiber firmly in place. A thermosetting resin, once catalyzed, it can not be reversed or reformed. Meaning, once a thermoset composite is formed, it cannot be remolded or reshaped. Because of this, the recycling of thermoset composites is extremely difficult. The thermoset resin itself is not recyclable, however, there are a few new companies who have successfully removed the resin through pyrolization and are able to reclaim the reinforcing fiber. Disadvantages of Thermoplastics Because thermoplastic resin is naturally in a solid state, it is much more difficult to impersonate reinforcing fiber. The resin must be heated to the melting point, and pressure is required to impregnate fibers, and the composite must then be cooled under this pressure. This is complex and far different from traditional thermoset composite manufacturing. Special tooling, technique, and equipment must be used, many of which are expensive. This is the major disadvantage of thermoplastic composites. Advances in thermoset and thermoplastic technology are happening constantly. There is a place and a use for both, and the future of composites does not favor one over the other.

Errors and Prevention During the course of working on my project, I encountered a storage space problem. A message box appeared when I was trying to save my work onto my personal drive on the school network. It said: There is not enough storage space in your disk. This was caused by the large graphics file in my project and they had to be deleted in order to allow me to save my work. This problem can be solved by compressing the pictures before they are pasted onto my work. Another problem that I encountered was file version compatibility. During half-term I had to use Publisher 98 on my guardians computer to work on my promotional leaflet which have been already started using Publisher 2000 on school computers, and, of course, the file had to be then saved in the format of Publisher 98 *. pub file. This degraded the layout and the quality of the pictures in the file. Later I received my own copy of Publisher 2002, and I used it to open my leaflet file, and the layouts went horribly wrong. The pictures in the leaflet, which were supposed to be wrapped round by the text in the text boxes, covered the text up instead, and no matter how many times I attempted to use different ways to put them back in place, the pictures just stayed like that (see 2nd attempt), and the only things I could do was to start a new file in the format of Publisher 2002 file. Life from the Bottom Lower classes have always been treated the worst of any other people. I, being a peasant farmer during the French Revolution, have experienced this maltreatment in mankind. We made up the largest group within the Third Estate. We were forced to do things that were out of our control. The peasants, such as me, did not like being under the rule of Louis XVI and his spouse Marie Antoinette. We were already deprived of money to begin with, yet we still lost half of what we had due to taxes. We were expected to pay feudal dues to the nobles, tithes to the church, and royal taxes to the king’s agent. Also, aside from taxes in money, we owed the corvà ©e. The corvà ©e was a certain form of tax that was paid by work rather than money. We were expected to do this for a certain number of days out of every year. During the rule of the Old Regime, peasants’ rights were depleted and our power was oppressed.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When the radicals tried Louis XVI for treason and demanded that he be executed, we peasants were relieved. We now gained more rights and felt freer. The Jacobins were now gaining more power. We didn’t like this at all. We were horrified by the beheading of the king. We knew that the beheadings could become a routine within our country. As many leaders were trying to gain power, one man slowly took control. His name was Maximilien Robespierre. His reign of power was known as the Reign of Terror. We were terrified of Robespierre’s power. We were all in danger of being guillotined. As many as 40,000 people were beheaded all together, and 80% of them were peasants. After awhile, the members of the National Convention knew none of them were safe from Robespierre. They finally turned against him and executed him on July 28, 1794. This execution ended the Reign of Terror. Everybody was relieved. If the European monarchies were able to squelch the revolutionary government of France, then Louis and Antoinette would not have ruled as long as they did. This would have meant, less tax paying for us peasants.

I have chosen to look at two speeches, one given by Barack Obama and another given by Bono. Both are very important leaders with their own kind of political influence. By choosing these speeches with a serious content (education and the third world) and both addressing the same kind of audience (students), I will be able to give an useful comparison in terms of leadership and emotional intelligence. Barack Obama's †Back to school† speech In his speech to the nation’s students (from kindergarten to 12th grade) President Barack Obama tries to stress the importance of getting an education and the responsibilities students have themselves.Addressing children ranging from 6 years to 18 years of age is a difficult task and Obama employs various strategies (both leadership and emotional) in order to get his message across to as many as possible. First of all, he talks directly to his listeners and makes sure they see him as a peer they can identify with and not only as th e President of the United States, which exemplifies his social skills. Secondly, he uses an informal style, a simple language, many repetitions, plenty of diverse concrete examples they can relate to, and he speaks to their patriotic feelings and their sense of responsibility.Obama’s main challenge with his target group is their size and diversity, and he therefore has to employ several strategies in order to reach as many as possible. Bono begins his speech by introducing himself. He actually starts to criticize people like himself. Bono is talking about rock stars and singers, and says that singers contain a very big ego. This statement is a little paradoxical, because Bono is a singer and a rock star himself (self-awareness).Afterwards he is making clear that he is not just a singer, but also a father and a friend of dogs. The problem or conflict Bono is bringing up through his speech is mostly about Africa and the poor (the third world). He mentions the conflict, which has taken place in connection with sending money to some of the poorest countries of the world. Comparison of the two speeches Both speeches start of by trying to meet the audience at eye level in order to inspire and motivate the audience.Both Obama and Bono succeed in doing this by making a rather humoristic intro before turning to the reel content of the political messages in the speeches. If this connection was not established, the political message would never get across to the rather difficult audience. The ability to establish this connection with an audience, an employee or a client is a sign of both good leadership skills and good emotional intelligence. Both Obama and Bono are very assertive in their speeches, but in very different ways. It is obvious that Bono is a rock star (who by nature exudes assertiveness) and not a politician like Obama.The Bono speech is written without a lot of foreign and long words, the language is very common, he uses little rhetoric, when getting his political messages across, which is all in oppose to the Obama speech. Obama uses long and intellectual words to promote his trustworthiness. Bono also uses a kind of slang when he says: â€Å"I’ve seen great minds and prolific imaginations disappear up their own ass (†¦)†. No one, especially not the President of The United states of America, besides a famous rock star, would be expressing themselves like that.Bono attracts the listeners’ attention by doing this, and he gets away with it, because of the entertainer and person he is. But it is definitely not something that a reel company leader would do in order to get his employees to follow him and his ideas. Obama shows a great deal of his emotional skills by letting in on his own weaknesses. Obama is the situational leader who guides his audience on what they must do and how they should do it, which you need to be, when you are the President of the United States of America. Bono I would characterize as a transformational leader (charismatic and inspirational).
